Maidstone United 3-2 Boreham Wood - Two wins out of two puts Stones "in good heart"
Maidstone United twice came from behind to win a five-goal thriller against a Boreham Wood side who only arrived at Bourne Park just over half-an-hour before kick-off due to traffic congestion on the M25, writes Mike Green.
With a cold strong wind blowing straight down the middle of the Bourne Park pitch, both sides struggled in the opening period to come to terms with the conditions. And it was ironically just after the Stones finally had an attempt on goal that the visitors scored.
Ray Freeman had done well down the left for the Stones and his centre saw Andy Martin flick a header straight at goalkeeper Noel Imber.
Immediately the keeper launched the ball downfield and it was Freeman’s error that saw the ball run to Byron Harrison to sweep the ball into the net from fifteen yards after 27 minutes.
Within five minutes though the impressive Martin had the Stones level.
His sensational through ball found Lyndon Rowland who escaped the attention of Ryan Moran to coolly beat Imber from the edge of the penalty box.
At half-time the home faithful wondered if their heroes could cope with the wind, now increasingly cold.
And on 65 minutes their worst fears were confirmed when Moran’s wickedly driven corner from the left somehow found its way in at the near post to restore the visitors’ lead.
This time though, the lead lasted barely sixty seconds. Again Welshman Martin was the provider and this time it was his free-kick into a crowded area which Imber totally misjudged and the keeper dropped the ball at the feet of the gleeful Errison Ahwan, who equalised from six-yards.
Young Luis Cumbers, who along with Rowland, had tormented the visitors’ defence all night, would have impressed the watching the Gills caretaker-boss Iffy Onuara and it was the nineteen-year-old who on 72 minutes thought he set his strike partner up to put the home side in front for the first time, only to be denied by an assistant’s flag.
With a quarter-of-an-hour to go, at the other end, Moran saw his free header go straight at Mullin when he really should have done better - and it was to prove so costly.
Within a minute the home side finally had their lead. Again Martin’s free-kick wasn’t dealt with by Boreham Wood’s defence, Ahwan’s header was only parried and Cumbers, on a month loan work experience deal from Gillingham, won the points for the Stones from a yard-out.
Afterwards, a happy Lloyd Hume told BBC Radio Kent, “Winning is a good habit to get into as I’ve been saying for some time. To win this after Saturday puts the boys in good heart.
“Yes, it was a cold night but I’m delighted to get the points and move up the table.”
Thanks to this win, and Saturday's 2-1 win over Tonbridge Angels, Maidstone United have climbed above the Angels in seventeenth place.
