Longhurst wields the axe

Thursday 11th September 2008

SLADE GREEN boss Matt Longhurst has wielded the axe and will announce which players have exited the Kent League club after Saturday’s home clash with Greenwich Borough, writes Stephen McCartney.

Longhurst is disappointed with the way things have gone, despite starting the campaign well.

“We have had a mixed start to the season with the last three games sending us to defeat, although the last game against Deal I felt we should have come away with at least a point,” Longhurst told www.clubwebsite.co.uk/sladegreenfc/

“But a goalkeeping error cost us, having just got back into the game through Lee Barnett.”

Ben Payne (Sittingbourne) and Lee Craig (Erith Town) have already left the club, but Longhurst has already added Luke May (Dartford) and Andrew Willis (Ebbsfleet United) to his squad in a bid to turn their fortunes around.

“I have released several players this week and will make them publicly known after the game Saturday,” said Longhurst.

Looking ahead to Greenwich Borough’s visit, Longhurst said: “I am excited about the prospect of a home debut of Luke May and also in the squad will be Andrew Willis.

“These lads are winners as well and technically good. We also welcome back Daniel Westerman and Jamie Lawrence after missing the Deal game through injury.”

Currently sitting in eleventh place, Longhurst pointed out his aims for the season ahead.

“I am looking to get a settled team out on the pitch over the next month of the season to establish ourselves in the top half of the table,” he said.

“I am confident that with a good performance on Saturday we can start to move up the table.

“We have suffered a lot of injuries to key players after the first game and should hopefully this week have a full squad to pick from. If that’s the case, I am sure this will be the turning point.”
