Legge is destined to turn professional, says Warrilow
TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow has urged two London Coca-Cola League clubs to make him an offer for central defender Leon Legge, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Ryman Premier League high-flyers have confirmed interest in a couple of their players by a number of scouts from higher leagues.
Several scouts have been reported to have been watching the team in the last few weeks - Southend United, Bristol Rovers, Dagenham & Redbridge and Millwall have all been mentioned.
The latter two are monitoring Legge in particular, with the 23-year-old centre back recently impressing during a trial game between Millwall and Dagenham & Redbridge.
Legge has been an excellent addition to the Angels squad since joining from troubled Blue Square Premier side Lewes in the close season, putting in performance of a consistently high standard every week.
He has scored five goals in 23 appearances for the Longmead Stadium outfit already this season.
And Warrilow, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk yesterday, after his side’s game at Staines Town was postponed just 50 minutes before kick-off, despite passing two earlier pitch inspections, says the Lions and the Daggers should make the club an offer if they are going to offer Legge regular football.
“He got asked to play in a game (for Millwall) against Dagenham, he went down there and done well,” said Warrilow. “They’re going to carry on monitoring him.
“In that game (Daggers boss) John Still saw the lad and has shown a bit of interest, but as yet there have been no bids made.
“I just want Leon to concentrate, he’s still improving.
“I think he will go into the League, it’s just a matter of when, but he has to go for the right reasons, for Leon as well.
“I just don’t want him to go to a club for the sake of making the numbers up. I want him to go to a club where he’s got a genuine chance to get in the first team’s and push on.”
Whoever does come in for the powerful centre-half will have to splash the cash.
“He’s on contract for this year and next. If a club come in for Leon, I’d never stop the lad progressing into the Football League," he said.
Warrilow, who played League football for Torquay United, added: “Obviously it’s got to be right for both parties.”
