Lawrence on stand-by to get his chance to impress - EXCLUSIVE

Thursday 13th March 2008

WHITSTABLE TOWN striker Danny Lawrence has rejected a move to Kent League neighbours Herne Bay, writes Stephen McCartney.

Lawrence, who signed for the club from Kent County League side Canterbury City after impressing against the Oystermen in a pre-season friendly, is on stand-by for Saturday’s local derby at Chatham Town.

Dave Cory, who has formed an excellent partnership up front with Ian Pulman, is currently bed-reddened with flu and Lawrence may get his chance to impress at Maidstone Road.

“They have been absolutely fantastic for us but a persons loss is another persons gain,” Seager said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk tonight.

“Dan Lawrence has turned down the approach from Herne Bay and he’s a big part of our plans. Against Chatham (at home) he was man of the match. If Dave’s not available I’ve got no fears for Danny to come in and keep Dave’s shirt.”

Seager, 35, is looking forward to returning to Chatham Town, one of his former clubs and although both clubs sit in the bottom six, he feels the both clubs will be playing Ryman League Division One South football again in August.

“It’s going to be a tough game especially with two sides that are in a position they would rather not be in,” said Seager.

“I’d say both sides are safe from relegation and with a point gap between us a win will enable us to climb the table and move above them.

“Personally I feel both sides will be playing Ryman League football next year no matter what the result is on Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to playing at Maidstone Road. I played for Chatham for a couple of seasons a long, long time ago when I was a youngster and I’ve always enjoyed playing there and I’m looking forward to it.”

And unlike the Premier League, Seager and Chats boss Steve Binks have come out tonight saying they have respect for one another ahead of the big Kent derby at Maidstone Road.

“I know Steve fairly well and we’ve always got on very well,” said Seager. “I’ve got lots of respect for him and the club.

“Steve Best is one of my former team-mates, we’ll have a drink after the game but before hand we’re there to do a job.”

Seager has been pleased with the attitude of his players as they’ll definitely be playing at this level of football again next season.

Second from bottom side Horsham YMCA are nine points below Seager’s side with eight games left to play.

“We’re trying to build a strong enough squad to make sure players fight for their shirts,” said Seager.

“The (Kent League) championship side is sort of finished if you like, there’s only six or seven of that left and we’ve rebuilt another good side.

“I think this side has a lot of potential and they’ve shown that. We had a tough run of fixtures and we’ve picked up some very valuable points in that in our quest that we’re still playing Ryman League football next year.”

“I don’t see why we can’t finish mid-table but if we finish third from bottom that’s a great achievement because Whitstable Town will be playing Ryman football next season.”

As mentioned above, Dave Cory is suffering with the flu and Gary Sayer (eye injury) is doubtful but Sam Denly comes back in.
