Kent League Scene: Whose been making the news this week?
Terry Cordice is determined to bounce back strongly after a nightmare run of four league defeats in a row - the worst of his five-year career as a manager, writes James Brown - article courtesy of www.favershamtownfc.co.uk
Faversham Town boss Cordice saw his out-of-sorts Lilywhites outclassed by Premier Division leaders Thamesmead Town at Bayliss Avenue on Saturday.
Former Faversham Town favourite Rikki Cable did the damage with a two-goal burst in 3-1 win for the Londoners that sends Cordice down to a hugely disappointing eighth in the table.
But he is ready to put on a show for the club's "outstanding" home fans when Faversham return to Salters Lane for the first time in three weeks and the visit of Deal Town on Saturday.
Faversham Town have beaten Deal twice in the League Cup already this season and Cordice is convinced his stuttering side can return to winning ways.
He said: "Losing four games in a row has to rank as my worst run as a manager. It's certainly never happened to me before and I am determined to put things right against Deal Town on Saturday.
"There was no real excuse for the poor performance against Sporting Bengal three weeks ago but VCD who we played last week and then Thamesmead on Saturday are good sides.
"I've always said they will be in the shake-up for the title come the end of the season. We have not been playing well lately but I have faith in the players. We need to go on a run of victories now and we are more than capable of doing that.
"The fans have been outstanding this season and we owe them a big performance."
Cable was at his swashbuckling best against his former team-mates and Cordice remains a big admirer of the talented front man.
He said: "I thought Rikki was the difference between the two sides. We matched them all over the park except the final third where Rikki was fantastic. He scored two quality goals.
"We are still struggling going forward. We're still making bad decisions when it matters most but I know the boys will come good for me."
Cordice remains committed to his players but is slowly blooding a number of new faces with former Ramsgate goalkeeper Jurgen Wild and midfielder Dean Walker-Mackenzie both making their debuts at Bayliss Avenue .
Cordice said: "I thought Jurgen did well and Dean looks a good signing. He could well be the ball-winning midfielder we've been after.
"We'll start again Saturday against a side we've already beaten twice and look to put a few things right. I'm confident we can give the fans something to cheer about."
Thamesmead Town boss Keith McMahon insists the Bayliss Avenue club can sustain Ryman League football if they win promotion.
The Mead are six points clear at the top of the Kent League table and the raven haired boss feels the current top three will have a major say in the destination of this season’s crown.
“If I’m sitting top of the league at Christmas which isn’t far away, yes I think we are (favourites for the title)” he said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
“I think it’s a three horse race to be fair, us, Whitstable and VCD, three really good sides but we’ve all have to play each other twice so anything can happen.”
McMahon, whose side welcomes local rivals Slade Green to Bayliss Avenue on Saturday in the second round of the Kent Senior Trophy, added: “The side I’ve got at the moment you would hope we can sustain Ryman League football.
“But you have to look at the sides that have gone up recently. Ramsgate have jumped two leagues, Cray Wanderers have done really well.
“We’ve played Ryman League teams throughout the season, we played Dulwich Hamlet in the London Senior Cup and beat them.”
Slade Green, meanwhile, have lost defender Paul Gross to rivals Erith & Belvedere.
Player assistant-manager Adam Heaslewood told www.clubwebsite.co.uk/sladegreenfc that the Small Glen outfit, who don't pay their players, cannot compete financially with their rivals.
He said: “As soon as Erith put in their seven day approach I expected him to join them because of the money.”
But the club have signed midfielder Mo Mahir from VCD Athletic along with Ebenezer Mahir, who has been released by Nationwide Conference club Gravesend & Northfleet.
The third new arrival was Raphael Akala, who has spent three years at Football League side Yeovil Town.
Martin Ford takes his VCD Athletic side to Croydon on Saturday and is expecting a tough game.
The Trams were the first visitors to Vickers’ revamped Oakwood ground at the end of September, impressing in the 2-2 draw.
Ford told www.vcd-athletic.co.uk : “This week we travel to what I consider one of the better sides in our division with a trip to Croydon.
“It will be a tough match but if we are near to full strength this is a game we must win.
“Thamesmead and Whitstable are in the cup so this gives us the chance to put a little bit more pressure on them with a victory.”
Both sides are the last two Kent League club’s in the third round of the FA Carlsberg Vase.
Croydon welcome Leamington but VCD Athletic travel to Wisbech Town on 9th December looking for revenge.
“Wisbech is one of the longest journey’s we could have asked for at the regional stage of the competition to reach the last 32,” said Ford.
“We have played Wisbech before losing 6-1 in the FA Cup four seasons ago so we know a little about the facilities we will come across.
“Much has changed for the two clubs since then so this will be a welcomed challenge for us.
“We will do our homework on them, enjoy the day and give it our best shot.”
Beckenham Town’s Kent Senior Trophy clash against minnows Milton Athletic at Eden Park Avenue on Saturday will kick off at 1:30pm.
