KENT LEAGUE CUP FINAL: George casts aside his medals - EXCLUSIVE

Sunday 04th May 2008

KEVIN GEORGE was “proud” to be a part of the Erith Town side that won the Kent League Cup for the very first time yesterday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The 25-year-old, who played down the left-hand side of a four man midfield, set up the only goal of a dull game against Hythe Town at Folkestone’s Buzzlines Stadium.

George’s 39th minute corner wasn’t dealt with at the near post by Hythe’s Dale Skelton and goalkeeper Paul Hyde and the ball hit the leg of midfielder Dave Cook, which found the back of his own net.

The Dockers, with a budget for the very first time, have enjoyed a groundbreaking season. Fifth place represents the club’s highest ever finish in the Kent League and they now have the Kent League Cup in their trophy cabinet.

“It’s always good to be a part of history isn’t it, so very proud we’ve won the Cup,” George said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk after yesterday’s hard-fought win.

“They were a hard team to break down,” he said of Hythe. “They weren’t the best tactically wise but they’re a big team.

“They took a lot out of us and after a long season going to compete for the league, and although we weren’t successful, we’ve done really well because as you know Erith are usually near relegation every year and not competing for the league.”

George admitted he was enticed to Avenue Road by player-manager Mark Tompkins, a former team-mate of his at Bromley.

“I know Tommo, playing with him with Bromley so once you’ve played higher and managed higher, you know people and you can get them to come in,” explained George.

“All these players he’s brought in have made a big difference.

“Obviously you’ve got to be getting the budget, you can’t do anything without money otherwise the players won’t come as everyone knows.”

Despite picking up a winners medal at Cheriton Road yesterday, George explained that it doesn’t mean anything to him.

“I never keep any of my medals or trophies,” he revealed. “I offered it to Albert (Putman, the club’s chairman), but he refused.

“Since I was younger, I don’t know what it us. You could collect them and after a while, I don’t know, people kind of get lost on memories.

“I want to achieve the next goal. (Instead of saying to people that I’ve) won this and won that and showing off all my medals, I just want to get the next one.

“I don’t keep any, the only thing I’ll keep is if I won the Premiership or Champions League.

“The last thing I remember winning was promotion with Bromley, I was actually playing with Tommo (Mark Tompkins) so that’s the last thing I won.

“I won a Cup before, I can’t remember what it was because I’ve played for a few teams.

“I’m always looking forward, I’m never looking back so even after this season, in two years time, if you ask me what I’ve won, I’ll never remember - I’ll always look forward.”

When asked about his plans for next season, the former Lincoln City midfielder added: “I haven’t got a clue mate, wherever I land - I don’t plan anything.”
