John Guest pleased with defensive qualities against fellow strugglers Holmesdale

LORDSWOOD assistant manager John Guest says his side have progressed during the year that he and Jason Lillis have been at the club, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Medway side leapfrogged over fellow strugglers Holmesdale with a 2-0 home win yesterday, courtesy of goals from Peter Huggins and Steven Elliott.

“It is a year now since Jason and I arrived at the club, where has it gone!” Guest told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

Reflecting on his side’s first Safety Net Associates Kent League win of the season, a result that takes their points tally to five from seven games to climb up to third-from-bottom, Guest said: “We have been working very hard since last season on the back five and we have begun to look well organised and solid and I congratulate the lads on a clean sheet.”

Guest added: “This gave us a spring board that if we score we do not have to change shape and stay strong.  That is exactly what happened and we scored another.

“In the past we have stopped playing and let the opposition back in.  That was not the case and with the side defending from the ground there was no way back for Holmesdale, who by the way won by six the previous week.

“We have now got four points from a possible six, which is excellent form.  There will be ups and obviously some downs but we are progressing and the gaffer and I are well pleased with all the lads’ efforts both on the training field and on match day.”

Guest revealed that Danny Cook has left the club and has signed for rivals Hythe Town.

Scott Porter’s Hythe will be looking to create FA Cup history on Saturday as they bid to become the first Kent League side to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in 53 YEARS, when Blue Square Bet South side Staines Town visit Reachfields Stadium on Saturday.

Guest said: “We wish Danny all the very best by all of the senior players and staff.  Dan is becoming a very good player.  Let’s hope when he returns with Hythe he is not at his best.  I say that tongue in cheek, well almost!”

Lordswood travel to VCD Athletic on Saturday.  Rookie manager Ricky Bennett collected the manager-of-the-month award for August and September but was left stunned when Tunbridge Wells beat them 3-1 last Tuesday and are at present sitting in third place in the table, just two points behind leaders Beckenham Town, who are likely to extend their lead further, as they play whipping boys Sporting Bengal United at Eden Park Avenue on Tuesday evening (7:30pm).
