I was promised everything but these promises were never kept - O'Boyle
O’Boyle has guided the club to sixth place in the Safety Net Associates Kent League so far this season with a record of three wins and three draws – just five points adrift of league leaders VCD Athletic - but resigned following the 1-1 home draw against Norton Sports on Saturday, just seven games into the season.
The club also reached the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, but were defeated 5-1 by Blue Square Bet South side Dover Athletic, in front of the Dockers’ largest crowd of the season of 282.
O’Boyle, who arrived from Thamesmead Town, where he was a successful reserve team manager, guided the Dockers to three top-eight finishes at the helm, but told www.kentishfootball.co.uk that he has left the Erith Sports Stadium outfit due to budget cuts.
“I am devastated to have to write this statement, but after the Norton Sports game on Saturday, the club committee informed me that they will be making severe financial cutbacks,” he said.
“With the events that occurred over the summer under the Chairman, Roy McNeil, I was promised everything a manager could want at this level, but unfortunately these promises were never kept.
“Roy McNeil was soon after voted out of the club by the Erith Town committee shortly before the start of our pre-season friendlies.
“I sat down with the committee at around the start of July and they informed of the budget that I should now work to, which was considerably lower than the budget with McNeil.
“Having already made a few big signings, this was obviously a major concern for myself and Tony Russell. Somehow we managed to get a squad together, which I feel is very strong and I believe that we could've won something this year.
“Myself and Tony have put a lot of hard work in towards the back end of last season, watching players around different leagues and also on the training ground during pre-season and the early part of this season, to get the team organised and playing good football. The team is making great progress, only to be told after seven league games that the resources would be cut by 50%.
“I am an ambitious manager, who craves success and dedicated a lot of my time to Erith Town and this was a major blow to me on Saturday, knowing that I would have to release a big part of my squad that me and Tony have worked so hard assembling. After serious consideration, I handed in my resignation to Albert Putnam.
“I understand that the club have to get the ground up to league standard, but if they had given me a realistic resource that they could guarantee for the whole season, I would have worked within that. I had to work to a reduced budget last year, after Christmas, which any football person would tell you, is not a good situation to be in. Everything you have built - team moral, togetherness, goes out the window, there and then.
“I have spoken to all the players and explained my reasons why I had to go and they were understanding, but also shocked at the cut to the budget. I do feel a little responsible, bringing these players to the club, only for them to be going after such a short time.
“With the work that myself and Tony have put in looking at different players, I have a good list of players and contacts to draw on and am already looking forward to getting back into management. I eat, sleep and breath football and can't be one doing nothing on a Saturday afternoon. I will miss the Saturday buzz and would love the opportunity for a new challenge.
“I would like to go on record to wish the players every success on the pitch this year at Erith Town and am sorry that things have ended this way. They are the best group of players that I have worked with and will miss them enormously. I would like to thank Erith Town for giving me the chance in the first place and wish them all the best in the future.”
