I want a leader out on the pitch, says Seager
Whitstable Town boss Marc Seager is looking for a leader out on the pitch to assist with the club’s rise up the Ryman League Division One South table, writes Stephen McCartney.
The newly promoted side are currently in the bottom six, having picked up three wins and four draws from their first thirteen outings - and are finding out that opponents’ punish your mistakes at this level.
“We keep shooting ourselves in the foot,” Seager said after his injury-ravaged side went down 4-2 at Whyteleafe yesterday.
Speaking on the club’s excellent website, www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk, he said: “Three of the goals were great strikes, but we gave the ball away cheaply and each time we deservedly were punished for those mistakes.
“At two-nil down we were under the cosh, we get a goal back and then let them back in the game again.
“We did the same when we got back to three-two, and they were on the back foot, and again we lost our shape.
“Yes, we are suffering with a number of players out injured, but the players in the side today are good enough to get results at this level.
“I am in danger of repeating myself, in the Ryman League if you slip up you will get punished, it’s that simple.”
Seager admitted that his players’ are shy when they step over the white line and is searching for a leader.
“Anyone at the game today could see how quiet we were. I am looking for a leader on the pitch, anyone can see we are too quiet,” he bemoaned.
“I told the players “you all have enough to say before the game, then again in the bar,"
“Save some of that for the ninety minutes of football and help each other. I am looking for more than the odd “come on lads”.
“I want more constructive talking so that the lads help each other out when they look as if they are in trouble.”
Seager wants his side to take advantage of home comforts this week; against Croydon Athletic (Tuesday) and Dulwich Hamlet (next Saturday).
“We have two home games in five days to put this behind us,” said Seager. “We need to keep a couple of clean sheets and four or six points to put a bit more space between us and the club’s below.
“We missed our chance today, but we will be ready come seven forty five on Tuesday and again next Saturday. If we cud out the mistakes we’ll be allright.”
