I'm going to grab my opportunity with both hands and go for it, says Nikita Whinnett

CHARLTON ATHLETIC have completed the signing of Nikita Whinnett from local rivals Gillingham.

And the new recruit spent little time outlining her ambitions for the season with her new club, saying, “I want us to win the league.”

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder spent just over a year with Gillingham in two spells, with a short stint at Millwall Lionesses sandwiched in between.

Whinnett has been on the books of some of the biggest women’s football clubs in the country, starting her career aged six with hometown side Liverpool before playing for Everton and Arsenal.

And now, having put pen to paper in south-east London, the ambitious player has one goal and one goal only – to help fire the Addicks into the FA Women’s Super League.

She told the club's website: “I’m buzzing, pretty ecstatic to be fair. I didn’t expect an opportunity like this. I’m going to grab it with both hands and go for it.

“I’ve been playing for 17 years and not really getting anywhere and now all of a sudden I’ve got big clubs who want me, it’s brilliant! I can’t wait to walk out there with a Charlton shirt on and feel proud of the team that I’m on.

“When (Gillingham) played against you the other week, you all wanted to win that game no matter what. You wanted to be first to the ball and I like that – it’s all about fighting and heart. That’s what you need.”
