Hopefully striker Andy Constable can go on a run and prove everyone wrong, says Keith McMahon

Monday 14th February 2011
THAMESMEAD TOWN boss Keith McMahon praised under-fire striker Andy Constable as his goal ended a run of eight games without a win at the weekend, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Mead have slipped out of the Ryman League Division One North play-off places down to fourteenth place in the table following their miserable run, but Constable scored the only goal of the game to see off strugglers Waltham Forest at Bayliss Avenue to lift morale.

“We weren’t really pleased, we just needed to get a bit of confidence and get three points and we actually done that and hopefully we can move on from there now,” said McMahon.

“It wasn’t the best game in the world to be honest, the first half especially.  It was pretty dire if I’m honest.  It was very one paced.  We was on top but a couple of chances were created but it looked like two teams struggling for confidence.

“But we got in at half-time and we had a few words and we came out with a better tempo and looked like our old selves and really should have won the game a lot more comfortably.

“As soon as we scored we relaxed and we done alright second half.”

McMahon was delighted that Constable’s ninth goal of the season has lifted his confidence.

He said: “Andy’s a great lad and he’s taken a bit of stick to be honest over the last couple of months, mainly from myself.  He scored 30 goals for us last year and this year, he’s not the only one, who hasn’t been scoring.

“He felt the pressure when I publicly came out and said we needed another forward and that can’t be too good for Andy to hear that.  He dealt with the situation well and hopefully he can go on a run and prove everyone wrong.”

But McMahon admitted that the loss of influential midfielder, Lea Dawson has coincided with his side’s poor run of form.

He said: “He’s missed the last seven weeks (with a knee ligament injury), so it’s a coincidence we go on a (bad) run. He’s a young lad but he’s a big influential player for us.  Hopefully we can get Lea back in the next two weeks.”

McMahon takes his side to Hertfordshire on Tuesday night to lock horns with Potters Bar Town.

Their hosts are in eleventh place in the table with 39 points from 27 games, just four points clear of the Kent club.

Potters Bar, meanwhile, have gone five home games without a win, four of those games without scoring.

But despite that barren run of form, McMahon still expects a tough game.

He said: “It will be a tough game.  They’re a good side.  I can see it being hard.  They’re young and very good going forward but it is a place we can go  and get a result if we play well.

“Hopefully Saturday’s win will take a lot of pressure of us and hopefully the lads can express themselves and play with a bit of freedom.”
