Hessenthaler Hook's a goalkeeper

DOVER ATHLETIC boss Andy Hessenthaler has a safe pair of hands - after signing Lee Hook this evening from Eastbourne Borough, writes Justin Allen.

Kent-lad Hook, 30, has been a regular between the posts at Priory Lane for the past four years and was rated one of the best keepers in the Blue Square Premier.

However, Lee has opted to drop down a division to join the Hess Express for "football and logistical reasons" - and signed a two-year deal.

Although Hook thoroughly enjoyed himself at Eastbourne, the travelling from his home in Ramsgate was becoming an issue - plus he has been impressed with Dover Athletic's quickfire rise back up the divisions.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler told www.doverathletic.com: "Lee is a player my No2 Darren Hare recommended. He is a good keeper and established in the Blue Square Premier.

"We need two quality keepers at the club - and if John Whitehouse signs, which we hope he does, we will have a pair of excellent keepers on the books.

"Competition for places is key anywhere. And Lee certainly brings that - and will be competing for that No1 jersey.

"Lee was impressed by where we want to go - and the travelling down to Eastbourne was getting too much for the lad, so a move here was ideal."

Defender Dean Hill, meanwhile, is staying at the club after penning a new one-year contract.

One player who will not be joining is striker Charlie Sheringham, son of former Manchester United, Tottenham, West Ham and England superstar Teddy Sheringham.

Hessenathler explained: "If they airlifted Crabble, and placed it somewhere further up the A2 towards London, he would have signed in seconds. The travelling is a problem for him, so we're looking elsewhere now for a striker.

"Frannie Collin and Shaun Welford were offered new deals after having superb seasons - and if we can add another quality performer then we should be fine in the forward area."
