You know what a Cup game is like, form goes out of the window, it’s who wants it the most sometimes, says Herne Bay joint-manager John Embery

HERNE BAY joint-manager John Embery says League form goes out of the window when you play in The FA Cup.

The Bay travel down to Lancing to play their Bostik South rivals Horsham in the Second Qualifying Round on Saturday, sitting in tenth-place in the table with a playing record of three wins from their opening five games of the season.

Horsham, meanwhile, are six places lower, having collected two wins and a draw from their opening six league outings.

The Hornets lost their first game of the season on the plastic pitch at Culver Road, going down to a 2-1 home defeat to Chipstead in midweek.

“We’re looking forward to it.  The FA Cup is always a good game to look forward to. It should be a good game,” said Embery, who runs the team alongside Jermaine Darlington.

The winners in this round each scoop £4,500 in much needed prize money from The Football Association.

“Like any non-league club, it’s a big thing. Money at this level needs to be generated, so it’s a great way for generating money," said Embery.

“We know a little bit about them, so that always helps, doesn’t it?  It’s a Cup game, you know what a Cup game is like, form goes out of the window, it’s who wants it the most sometimes.”

Herne Bay were knocked out of the Kent Reliance Senior Cup in the Second Round on by Bostik Premier side Margate, who came away from Winch’s Field with a 3-1 win on Tuesday night, but Embery was delighted with his side’s 4-0 home win over VCD Athletic last weekend.

“It’s pleasing. We’ve done ok in the league. The team’s gelling well, working hard, doing the right things, playing the right way, so we’re quite pleased,” said Embery.

“It was a good game, we played very well. Our league form has been very good. Maybe the Sittingbourne game we didn’t play well at but we’ve done very well this season in the league.

“I suggest on Saturday the scoreline flattered them, but you’d take 4-0 all day long.”
