Margate’s player-manager Robin Trott is relishing their opening pre-season friendly against League One side Millwall at Hartsdown Park on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Ryman Premier League club started pre-season training last Saturday and go into their game against the Lions, who were relegated at the end of last season, with just three training sessions under their belts.

But it gives fans of the Thanet club a chance to see the club’s summer signings, as Trott’s men aim to win promotion next April.

Speaking about their training sessions, Trott, who took over from Chris Kinnear in April, told www.kentishfootball.co.uk:  “It’s gone well and I’m really pleased with the boys and their attitudes.”

Trott revealed that around 17 players have attended pre-season training for the first team and will hand a 20-year-old trialist the goalkeeper’s jersey against the South Londoners.

When asked who he was, Trott revealed Scott Chalmers-Stevens was a YTS at Mansfield Town.

Trott, who also revealed he’s placed Hasim Deen on the transfer list without explaining why, is hoping his players bond during their first outing.

“We have been promised a first team and hopefully that’s what we’re going to get,” he said.

“We want them to play a strong side - it should be good.

“A clean sheet would be nice. I just want the boys to have fun. Obviously I don’t want to be beaten five-six-seven nll.

“I want them to enjoy themselves and string some passes together to get some belief.

“A win would be nice but we are looking for a spark between the boys, triangles, keeping the ball.

“I want to see them play as a team and not as individuals.”

With just two football matches taking place in the Garden of England on Saturday (the other is at Winch’s Field when Lewes travel to Herne Bay), Trott is hoping for a “full house”.

“Yes, I think we will get a good crowd,” he said. “It’s nice for the club financially, which they need.

“It will be nice to have a full house - the more the merrier. Bring it on. A big crowd will be good for the young ones coming through.”
