Greenwich expect Moore as they target top six - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Greenwich Borough manager Phil Miles has bolstered his squad with the capture of former Welling United midfielder Daniel Moore, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Eltham resident made his debut for his home-town club when he came off the substitutes bench after 64 minutes into their Kent League game against unbeaten side Whitstable Town.
Meshach Nugent’s brace, his second an injury time penalty, took his own tally for the season to twelve and is now the club’s leading goalscorer.
Moore has signed for the club on a dual registration with Ryman Premier League side Ramsgate.
Miles admitted bringing a player of such quality to the club is “a good addition” to his squad.
He said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk : “We need players of that quality. I spoke to (Ramsgate manager) Jim (Ward) on Sunday and he didn’t want to lose him at all.
“So what we’ve agreed, he’s kept hold of his registration for Ryman’s football, he’s transferred out of the Kent League second division, which he was playing for the reserves.
“He will play a big part in the sixteen, seventeen games we’ve got left. He’s a good player. A club like this can’t turn that down.”
Whitstable’s visit attracted the largest crowd of the season at Harrow Meadow when 147 fans watched an enthralling second half and Miles hopes his side play well on Saturday when Deal Town visit.
“I watched Deal Town last Saturday at Erith & Belvedere,” he said. “They’re a good side, the Kent League is full of good sides and everybody can beat everybody on their day.
“Whitstable, Thamesmead, VCD and Croydon, they’re the better sides in the league but Deal should have been two or three down at half-time (against the Deres) but hung in there and they done a good job and nicked it in the end.”
But the former Slade Green joint-manager believes his side can repeat their impressive display they put in the 2-2 draw with Whitstable.
“If we perform like that, I can’t have any arguments” he said. “I can come in after every game and I can look the players in the eye and say “you’ve given us 120%, you’ve played good football, you’ve tried your best and you’ve got beaten. So be it. That’s all I can ask for.”
Tender loving care, both on and off the pitch, however, has seen crowds at Harrow Meadow rise by 10.6%.
“Our attendances have actually gone up,” said Miles. “I think they ranged last year at about 40 and they’ve increased to about 50 or 60 so we’re getting a few extra bodies.
“The club has got to take a little bit of credit for that because they’re working hard off the pitch.
“The chairman’s enthusiastic and he’s trying to bring people and sponsorship to the club to help the club progress.
“If we can get it right on the pitch, this time last year the club had played the same number of games and had about seven points.
“Now we sit here we’ve now got 31 points and have still only been beaten four times this season so it’s moving in the right direction.
“We haven’t really set any targets but anybody who starts the season you want to be better than what you were last season so we’re a long way along that line.
“We want to finish in the top six. If we can finish in the top six, or higher, to me that’s a fantastic achievement.
“That’s the first step of the ladder of turning this football club around – that’s the first step complete.”
