It would be great to get a run in The FA Cup, says Greenwich Borough boss Gary Alexander
GREENWICH BOROUGH manager Gary Alexander says he wants to guide his club to The FA Cup First Round this season.
The club open their campaign in the Preliminary Round tomorrow when relegated Three Bridges visit.
Three Bridges were relegated from the then Ryman League Division One South last season, while Alexander guided Greenwich Borough to a third-place finish, which was the club’s highest ever position.
“The FA Cup is always special to be involved. It’s a competition that every footballer in the world wants to be part of,” said Alexander, 38.
“Three Bridges will be a tough encounter as they’ll be looking to show people what they are capable of after their disappointment last season, so we’ll be treating the game like any other game.
“It would be great to get a run in The FA Cup as not only it is a great competition it also can help financially and that goes a long way towards a club like Greenwich and I’m sure Three Bridges would feel the same.
“My own FA Cup memory was a run that took myself and John Mackie (with Leyton Orient in 2006) to the Fourth Round beating then Premiership side Fulham and going out to another former Premier side in Charlton – what an experience, what a buzz.
“There’s probably is no better competition for a club like ours. The dream is the First Round proper but that’s a long way away. We can all dream and dream of who we might get, who you might upset along the way.
“They’re one-off games and anything can happen, that’s what makes it so special.”
Greenwich Borough opened their Bostik South campaign with a 1-1 home draw to Whyteleafe last Saturday, before losing 1-0 at Corinthian-Casuals – the side that also beat them 4-3 in the play-off semi-final at the end of last season.
Alexander said: “As for our start to the season, it’s not what we would’ve wanted with one point from six but there’s no point dwelling on it. There’s 44 games to go and plenty of room for improvement so hopefully our first three points isn’t too far away.”
