The second half of the season has to be better! We have to win more games, we have to be more ruthless and if we can do that hopefully we’ll pick up more points than the teams above and see where it takes us, says Greenwich Borough boss Gary Alexander

GREENWICH BOROUGH manager Gary Alexander says his side must win more games during their last 22 league games of the season.

The club remain in sixth-place in the Bostik South table after thrashing Sittingbourne 5-1 yesterday, a result that has them on 42 points, six points adrift of leaders Lewes and five points adrift of second-placed Cray Wanderers.

Sam Corne gave Greenwich Borough a lead before Sittingbourne, who started the day in eighth-place, levelled through Salvyn Kisitu’s first goal for the club on the stroke of half-time.

Greenwich Borough were clinical in front of goal during the second half, scoring four times in the final 26 minutes.

Chinedu McKenzie made it four goals in four games since his switch from Vanarama National League side Maidenhead United, before Jack Barham’s brace was sandwiched by Jack Sammoutis’ tap-in.

Barham has now scored 15 goals this season, nine of them coming for their Bostik South rivals Phoenix Sports, who are creeping up the table and are only a couple of places behind Greenwich, five points behind.

Greenwich Borough welcome bottom-five side Guernsey to Middle Park Avenue next Saturday (13:00).

“Another tough game as every game is.  I’m not going to say no different, every side, we’ve seen it this season, every team beats every team in this league,” said Alexander.

“We have to make sure we’re switched on to every game.  We’ll focus on every game and we’ll prepare right for every game and if we can do that we’ll give ourselves the best chance of winning a football match.”

Alexander then takes his side to play Phoenix Sports on Boxing Day, Tuesday, 26 December (13:00).

“Phoenix have picked up over recent weeks, they’re a good side,” said Alexander.

“It’s tough, it’s the Christmas period so if we look after ourselves and we make sure we prepare the best way possible, we’ll give ourselves the best chance to win a football match.

“We’re in the pack, we’re in a nice position and our first half of the season should’ve been better, we should have more points on the board.  The boys know that, I know that and some of our performances have been good and we haven’t quite had it but the second half of the season has to be better!

“We have to win more games, we have to be more ruthless and if we can do that hopefully we’ll pick up more points than the teams above and see where it takes us.

“There’s 22 games to go, there’s six, seven or eight teams in there that can still win this league but nothing’s decided at Christmas.”
