Gary Alexander hails the arrival of star striker Charlie MacDonald to Greenwich Borough

Friday 10th June 2016

GREENWICH BOROUGH boss Gary Alexander has pulled off a summer transfer coup by bringing in striker Charlie MacDonald, who was playing National League football for Boreham Wood last season.

The 35-year-old started his playing career at Charlton Athletic and has also played for Cheltenham Town (loan), Torquay United (loan), Colchester United, Margate, Stevenage Borough, Crawley Town, Gravesend & Northfleet, Southend United, Brentford, Milton Keynes Dons, Leyton Orient, Oldham Athletic, Barnet, Boreham Wood and St Albans City (loan).

Greenwich Borough claimed the Southern Counties East Football League title last season and will be playing Ryman League Division One South football for the first time in their history when the new season gets underway in August.

MacDonald’s signing represents the club’s biggest signing since then manager Ian Jenkins brought former Millwall ace Alexander to the club two summers ago.

“Charlie is a great addition to our club,” said Alexander, who is preparing for his first full season in charge of Greenwich Borough.

“He brings experience, quality and hunger to win football matches.  He’ll be great to have around for everybody.

“I’ve worked with him in the past and know exactly what you get.

“The squad is coming together nicely. We have a great blend of youth and experience now, one I hope will help us win games in the Ryman.

“Everyone who is on board, old and new lads, have all brought into where we want to go and how we want to play.”

Alexander has made three summer signings with Lewwis Spence and Remi Sutton coming in from Ryman League Division One North side Thurrock.

“Charlie, Lewwis Spence and Remi Sutton would strengthen anyone’s team so I’m pleased I’ve got them,” added Alexander.

“We’re looking forward now to a new challenge in the Ryman where there are some good sides so it’s going to be tough but we hope to compete and put points on the board and see where it takes us.”

Greenwich Borough begin their pre-season campaign with a trip to Lancing to play Loxwood on Saturday 9 July (11:00).

The club have taken over as landlords of Cray Valley’s ground at Middle Park Avenue in Eltham, with the Millers now tenants.

Greenwich Borough play at the ground as landlords for the first time when Millwall visit on Friday 29 July.

Meanwhile, Greenwich Borough have confirmed that the curtain raiser to the new season, the Southern Counties East Football League Roy Vintner Challenge Shield against Hollands & Blair has been switched to Beckenham Town’s Eden Park Avenue ground on Sunday 31 July (3pm).

A club statement said: “The traditional season opener with the SCEFL champions taking on the SCEFL Challenge Cup winners was to be only the second game to be played on the brand new pitch at our stadium following just two days after welcoming a Millwall XI to Middle Park Avenue.

“The decision has been taken to move the fixture to Beckenham Town in order to minimise any early damage and wear on the brand new pitch in order to give it the best possible chance to bed in for the long season ahead in the Ryman League Division One South.”
