Four-team Kendo Cup to pay fitting tribute to the late Ken Thurgood

Monday 07th July 2014
FARLEIGH ROVERS will be staging a four-team tournament to honour former Holmesdale, Croydon and Lingfield manager Ken Thurgood.

Thurgood sadly passed away about eighteen months ago after battling cancer for some time.

Holmesdale, East Grinstead, Phoenix Sports and a Kendo Select XI will contest the Kendo Cup at Farleigh Rovers’ home ground in Surrey.

Phoenix Sports’ joint-manager Tony Beckingham was a close friend with Thurgood both on and off the pitch.

He said: “We held a memorial game, The Kendo Cup in his memory last year between Holmesdale and Warlingham, with both sides consisting of players that had played under Ken plus a few guest appearances.

“For the record, Holmesdale won the game but it was all about his family, friends and the many people within the football community coming together to celebrate the man and his contribution to the game.

“Farleigh Rovers FC very kindly allowed free use of their facilities and were fantastic hosts, the game was well attended and a fitting tribute to Ken.

“We have decided to change the format this year and as such it will be a four team tournament, hosted again by Farleigh Rovers and will take part over the weekend of the 19th and 20th July.”

East Grinstead Town, who have secured promotion to the Ryman League Division One South, have confirmed that they will be treating the weekend to give their first team a couple of games.

Phoenix Sports and Holmesdale will once again be lining up against each other in the Southern Counties East Football League this coming season.
