Foley's patience is rewarded as Barton finally signs
Barton was part of the successful back to back promotion winning Maidstone United side that went from Kent League to Ryman Premier in consecutive seasons and can play in a number of positions in defence or midfield.
Having started the season at Walton & Hersham, where he joined from Tunbridge Wells last year, Barton was released as part of a budget drive by Walton manager John Crumplin, but with VCD's Crayford ground being closer to his home in Kent, Vickers manager Paul Foley stepped in to sign his former Maidstone United team-mate at the third time of asking having attempted to sign him for the last three seasons.
Foley, speaking to www.vcd-athletic.co.uk, is pleased to have finally tied down a long-term target.
He said: “Barts is someone I have tried to sign ever since we took over but we could never afford to pay what the likes of Maidstone or Redhill were paying him!”
“His situation is a bit different now and like others who have signed for us in the last year he wants to play regularly and to enjoy it again.
“He knows a few of the lads and will fit in well. He is a strong, experienced player who is as fit as anyone I have played with and he will bring plenty to the team.
“With Kane Rice out injured for a few weeks we are missing his pace, aggression and ability both with and without the ball.
“We needed to get someone in who could slot straight in and Jason fits the bill. We are also looking to bring maybe one other player to the squad to strengthen further still but we shall see if that happens in the next few days.”
Barton is eligible to play in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round tie on Saturday away to AFC Totton, who are currently lying in 6th spot in the Zamaretto League.
VCD know all about Totton having played them two seasons ago in the FA Vase when they (Totton) were favourites to win the competition in Foley's first season in charge.
In what many Vickers’ fans consider to be the Vickers’ best ever performance and result of their senior status career, the Vickers came away from Testwood Park with a 1-0 win thanks to a Kevin Spriggs header despite a missed penalty from Ashley Probets.
The result put the Vickers firmly on the map having put out the previous year's finalists in the famous competition.
Both sides have gone through many changes and are both improved and with £3,000 prize money up for grabs the reward this time will be different to the glory of the Vase.
