Faversham stars come out for charity

Monday 20th April 2009
WITH the end of the football season now in site Salters Lane is gearing up for one the season's highlights as a Faversham Town Chairman's XI prepare to do battle this coming Sunday, 26th April, when they face a team of Coaches representing Faversham Town Juniors and Youth in the Annual Rayland Challenge Trophy at Salters Lane.

The trophy, jointly sponsored by Rayland Contractors Limited and Tesco Faversham was contested for the first time in 2007 with Faversham Town chairman Bob Mason's side collecting the silverware following a 4-1 victory in front of a crowd of 120.

Last season's contest saw a much closer scoreline with Club Chairman Bob Mason's side retaining the trophy in a thrilling 4 - 3 victory.

Any talk of "fun football" though is quickly dismissed by Mason as he prepares his side confident of making it 3 wins in 3 years,

"Once again I have the luxury of quality players begging me to pick them for, what is a prestigious game," said Mason.

"This years squad includes several players known to Faversham Town fans with former Lilywhites Phil Sainsbury, Scott Davenport, Ray Turner and Julian Beal all desperate to perform."

Mason continued there's even talk of first team manager Justin Luchford dusting off his boots to team up with former Faversham Town Skipper Beal in midfield!

The event, which allows many of the players a last chance at recapturing their youth, also has a serious side with all monies raised being donated to Demelza House Children's Hospice.

The match kicks off at 2 pm and promises to be an entertaining afternoon, hot and cold refreshments will be available and the clubhouse will also be open throughout the afternoon.

Admission is £1 with all proceeds going to Demelza House.
