Farnie: All my players are good enough to start - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Thursday 12th October 2006

Tunbridge Wells boss Martin Farnie takes his side to Lordswood on Saturday on the back of a six match unbeaten run, writes Stephen McCartney.

Ever-present goalkeeper James Simpson kept his first clean sheet of the season as Erith Town were beaten 2-0 as Farnie’s side got their Kent League Cup Group D campaign off to a winning start.

Two stunning strikes from Joe Fuller, taking his tally up to four this season, settled a dour game, which turned into a farce as the second half was delayed by around fifteen minutes as the match officials ordered the home club to re-paint some of the lines on the wet Culverden Stadium pitch.

But Farnie was pleased with the result, and feels his side will climb off the foot of the Kent League table at Lordswood on Saturday.

He EXCLUSIVELY told www.kentishfootball.co.uk: “Pleased with it, another win, two good goals and a clean sheet, which is important - first one of the season.

“I thought we played ugly tonight and won, which is very pleasing.

“We’ve been playing really well, playing really fluent but tonight I thought we dug in and showed a bit of grit.”

Farnie made four changes to the side that thrashed Pagham 6-1 in the FA Vase on Saturday, but he is happy that his squad relish competition.

“I changed the side from what’s been doing well for me and the squad players, not the squad players, the whole 16-17 of them, are all vying for the starting eleven.

“They are all good enough to get into the eleven so my job is to pick what I think is right for every situation and I thought the side was good tonight.

“I thought we had good shape, good balance and I thought we did really well.”

Looking ahead to their trip to Lordswood on Saturday, Farnie insists his side have the momentum to climb the table.

“We’ve got the momentum because we keep winning games of football so the momentums with us,” he said. “The confidence is oozing out of us at the moment.”

Fuller, 22, was pleased that he took his chance, having started the last three games on the bench.

He added: “It’s good to have a start after the last three games I’ve been on the bench. (I’m) glad I got on and scored my two goals.”

And with a much stronger squad available, Fuller insists they will start climbing the Kent League table.

“We had to get our players back but I think we’re strong again now,” he said. “We’ve got the likes of Andy Garrett back.

“We haven’t played much in the league lately but we look strong and I think we’ll improve more and more.”

Just 42 fans, their lowest crowd of the season, watched last night’s win over Erith Town, and Fuller admitted replicating the form that helped them reach the Kent Senior Trophy final last season, when they lost to VCD Athletic on penalties at Park View Road, will attract bigger gates.

He said: “More wins we do the crowds will come back, won’t they?

“The cup final last year was a good experience. That brought in a few people.

“We get to another one, do better in the league, more and more people will come down.”
