FA CUP SPECIAL: Wycombe will be in for a shock, insists Main
KENT GROWN striker Jon Main is destined to make a good impression in front of the live Setanta television camera’s tonight, writes Stephen McCartney.
Main, 27, has scored 13 goals for Blue Square South side AFC Wimbledon already this season, and he’s looking forward to playing in his first ever televised game.
The Dons welcome Wycombe Wanderers to a SOLD OUT Kingsmeadow in the first round of the FA Cup, plotting an upset.
The Buckinghamshire outfit are joint-top of Coca Cola League Two but Main is confident his team-mates can join fellow giant-killers Curzon Ashton, Blyth Spartans and Histon in round two.
“It’s my first time I’m playing on the tele (so I’m) looking forward to it and hopefully we’ll get something out of it, like a win,” the former VCD Athletic, Cray Wanderers and Tonbridge Angels striker told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
Despite needing replays to knock out Bedford Town and Dover Athletic, AFC Wimbledon also ended the hopes of another Kent side, Maidstone United, winning 1-0 at Bourne Park in the final qualifying round.
Main, however, is confident that he’ll be grabbing the national headlines tonight.
“It only takes a (little) time to score a goal and hopefully I’ll be the man to do that,” he said.
“We’ve had three training sessions this week, we’re all pumped up. We think we know how Wycombe are going to be playing and we’re looking forward to it.
“I think Wycombe will be in for a shock when they come down to our ground.”
Victory will set up a second round trip to fellow non-league club Eastwood Town, and Liverpool fan Main will be just one win away from a potential dream trip to Anfield.
“Look at the couple of shocks that have happened already,” he said.
“There’s not much difference in the standard I think. The key is as long as we don’t concede in the first ten (minutes). We’ll take the game to them and we’ll get the result.
“I’ve been chatting to my dad about that. There’s an incentive to win the game with a second round tie against Eastwood to get a chance to get in the third round. It’s a good draw.”
