We have to make sure we're better than last year, says Erith & Belvedere boss John Wilfort

ERITH & BELVEDERE manager John Wilfort admits his side underachieved in the Southern Counties East Football League last season.

The Deres finished in the bottom four and Wilfort admits that was unacceptable for a club of such high regard.

He said: “Well going back to last year was a very difficult season finishing in the bottom half of the table, which was not good enough.

“I came in late on in the season so was bringing numerous players in and out the squad, which just didn’t work and could not hit any form, but we got ourselves to a final, sadly we lost but it did keep our season alive.”

Wilfort has ensured his side played against higher league sides during pre-season to get up to speed.

He said: “Pre-season for me has gone really well minus the results.  I have got in the players I wanted.  They have all gained experience against some very good opponents.  We have not played any teams below us, all teams have been one, two or three leagues above.

“We have got very sharp and fit and even though it’s been a big ask from the boys I think we have benefited massively.

“I have recruited a tight-knitted bunch here and just asked them to make sure we are better than last year and compete better and be that team that are hard to beat.”

Erith & Belvedere welcome Southern Combination League side Loxwood, who hail from West Sussex, in The FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round on Saturday afternoon.

“Going onto Saturday’s game I see loads of people are moaning about the early fixture. Yes, it ain’t ideal at all as we really rely on these cup ties to nick some pennies,” said Wilfort.

“Listen, it is what it is. We have a tough game against Loxwood, they’re really organised and have some tidy players.  I’m expecting a tough game and the boys know this too.

“I hope they have watched us as I have not played my strongest 11 once during pre-season so maybe the joys of this early fixture can work in your favour.

“Who knows what will be will be but I will make sure my team are fired up and ready to go come 3pm on Saturday and know the importance of this game and every game which follows.”
