Fans can pay what they like to watch Dulwich Hamlet play VCD Athletic

Thursday 17th September 2015

DULWICH HAMLET are urging fans to “pay what they like” for their home game against VCD Athletic on Saturday 3 October.

This is a week before the annual country-wide “Non League Day” initiative that runs up and down the land.

But The Hamlet are due to play away that day, so have embraced the spirit of the day seven days earlier.

Dulwich Hamlet’s Community spokesperson Mishi Morath said: “We had so much fun last year; we didn’t want to miss out this time around even though we’re playing away on the day.”

Last season all at Dulwich Hamlet embraced Non League Day and were rewarded with a then record stadium attendance of 2,856 against Hampton & Richmond Borough, with fans being asked to ‘Pay what you like’ at the gate, rather than the usual £10.

As a result, the two designated charities, chosen by the Mayor of Southwark, benefitted to the tune of £6,000.

This year, through the generosity of the club owners, the Hadley Property Group, supporters are again being asked to come along and simply donate at the gate.

The two charities to benefit this year will be Cooltan Arts, a local mental health charity based in the Walworth Road, that are the club’s Official Charity Partner for the 2015/16 season – and The British Heart Foundation, picked after two Dulwich Hamlet fans suffered serious health scares last season.

Mr Morath added: “None of this would be possible without the foresight of our owners the Hadley Property Group. It is a big gamble, as match day costs still have to be covered, but our fans really publicised this event last season, our Supporters’ Trust were brilliant and we’re hoping for more of the same this season.”

Club chairman Jack Payne added: “We love holding special days like this. It’s our way of thanking both our fans and the wider local community for being so loyal to us over the last few years. It’s part of what makes the club so special.”
