Doncaster are the team to beat, says Millwall Lionesses' skipper Dionne Lennon
The Southern Counties East Football League hosts have been busy to get their Eden Park Avenue pitch ready to welcome two teams that play in the second tier of the women’s game.
Doncaster Rovers Belles have won all five of their league games so far, whilst Millwall Lionesses sit in third-place with two wins and two draws from their five league outings.
Lionesses skipper Dionne Lennon told the club’s website that she wants her team-mates to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa in their last game on 25 May.
The defender said: “We had a week off at the beginning of the break to recover from the hectic schedule at the start of the season, but after that we got straight back into training.
“We lost the last game before the break, which we were disappointed with because it ended a good run and when you lose you want to get straight back into it.
“That loss highlighted some issues that we had and needed to sort out, so we’ve had the chance to work on that.”
The Lionesses’ longest serving player is looking forward to Sunday’s game against the league leaders.
She said: “Doncaster won’t be easy first up. I said before the season they would be the team to beat.
“But you’ve got to play the best to get to where you want to be and I think all the girls are looking forward to it.”
Doncaster Rovers Belles’ head coach, Gordon Staniforth, meanwhile, hopes his side can carry on where they left off before the break.
“We’re excited. It seems like it’s been a long five weeks and we want to pick back up where we left off,” he told the club’s website.
“Millwall are third in the league and they deserve our respect.”
The Donny boss paid tribute to Beckenham’s groundsman Ian Muir for his tireless efforts to get the pitch ready earlier than normal.
He said: “I’ve already had a look at their ground and it looks like a fantastic surface. We’ll enjoy playing there and will try and get the start to the second half of the season that we want.
“The preparations over the break have been great. The girls have been keen to come back and have all done some training work over the break. Sometimes the problem is that we have to hold them back a bit!”
Admission prices for Sunday’s game have been confirmed at £5 (adults) and £2 (children under 16), which can be paid at the turnstiles.
Beckenham Town will also stage the Lionesses’ home game against Arsenal in The FA Women’s Super League Continental Cup on Sunday, 13 July.
