Although the likes of Sheppey have much greater financial resources available to them, it was another indicator that we can compete with these sides, says Deal Town coach Steve King
DEAL TOWN coach Steve King says competing with the likes of Sheppey United proves how far the club have come this season.
Warren Mfula scored his eleventh goal of the season to give Ernie Batten’s side a 1-0 win at The Charles Sports Ground on Tuesday night.
Batten’s side have collected 71 points from their 27 Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division games, three points behind leaders Chatham Town, who have a far superior goal difference but have played a game more.
Glebe remain in third-place with 58 points from 24 games, while Deal Town remain in fourth with 53 points from 25 games.
“We were really disappointed to have lost the game on Tuesday. We gave away a really poor goal after 20 seconds and that gave Sheppey a lead to defend in difficult conditions,” said King.
“I was really pleased with our second half performance and think we were deserving of a point on the night.
“It shows how far we have come that everyone was disappointed that we didn’t take anything from the game.
“Although the likes of Sheppey have much greater financial resources available to them, it was another indicator that we can compete with these sides.”
Deal Town are expected to pick up all three points when second-from-bottom side Tower Hamlets come to the Kent coast tomorrow.
Tower Hamlets have lost their last six games in all competitions and remain in the relegation zone, five points adrift of safety, with Rusthall looking over their shoulders.
“Tower Hamlets have picked up some good results across the season and are a dangerous side who play good football,” warned King, with 13 league games left to play.
“It’s a another tough game and a game we should be looking to win if we perform at the levels we are capable of and that is the aim.
“We are delighted with where we are in the league and are above the targets we set ourselves. However, that doesn’t mean we will start resting on our laurels.
“We still have a number of tough fixtures, especially away from home, to play and we will be looking to pick up as many points as possible.”
Sheppey United assistant manager, Marcel Nimani, says he has high hopes for Deal Town and Tunbridge Wells next season.
