Wednesday 06th August 2014
DARTFORD boss Tony Burman has unveiled the signing of former AFC Wimbledon midfielder Peter Sweeney.

Glasgow born Sweeney, 29, has six caps for Scotland at under 21 level to his name and made his Millwall debut in 2002, before playing for Stoke City, Yeovil Town (loan), Walsall (loan), Leeds United, Grimsby Town (loan), Bury and AFC Wimbledon.

“I am delighted to have signed Peter on contract for the coming season,” Burman told the club’s website.

“I have been speaking with him for the last couple of weeks and I feel that he is a type of player who will improve the squad.

“Peter is a very creative midfield player and with over 250 Football League appearances, his experience will be a valuable asset to the team.”

Sweeney has been allocated squad number 16 at Princes Park.

The Darts kick-off their third Vanarama Conference campaign with a home game against Wrexham on Saturday.

The Darts were effectively relegated after finishing third-from-bottom last season with 44 points from 46 games but were given a reprieve after both Hereford United and Salisbury City were thrown out of the league over financial matters.

Burman retains the proud fact that he is the longest serving English born manager in the top five divisions of English football.
