Credit to the boys for keeping us in the Conference, says Welling United boss Jamie Day

Thursday 17th April 2014
WELLING UNITED manager Jamie Day says he is pleased to have kept the club in the Conference Premier.

The Wings welcome Skrill Premier champions Luton Town to Park View Road on Saturday, where a big crowd is expected to celebrate Luton’s return to the Football League following a five year absence.

John Still’s side have collected 92 points from 43 games this season and are ten points clear of second-placed Cambridge United, who must settle for a place in the play-offs.

Former Welling United defender, Fraser Franks, 23, left Park View Road to sign for Luton Town on 17 January 2014, and Day says he is pleased that his former player has been successful with his new club after winning a Conference South winners medal with the Wings in April 2013.

“We are looking forward to the game on Saturday,” said Day.

“Luton are worthy champions and have been the most consistent team this season.

“I am pleased for Fraser as well.  It’s fantastic to have two winners’ medals in two years.”

Welling United have slipped down to seventeenth-place in the table with 57 points from 43 games and Day has successfully kept the Kent club in the division and go into the last three games of the season 12 points clear of the relegation zone.

The Wings previously spent fourteen years’ in the top flight of non-league football between 1986-2000, but the division is now a tough one to compete in due to the high number of former Football League clubs involved.

“Our first season has been a successful one but overall I’m pleased to stay up,” said Day.

“It’s been a long, hard season but credit to the boys for keeping us in the Conference.”
