My FA Trophy record is embarrassing so I want to have a good run in it, says Cray Wanderers boss Tony Russell

CRAY WANDERERS manager Tony Russell says he is keen to improve on his own personal FA Trophy record.

The Wands climbed up to seventh-place in the Bostik South table after beating their local rivals Phoenix Sports 3-1 at Hayes Lane on Wednesday night, extending their winning run to four on the bounce.

Horsham visit Hayes Lane tomorrow in the Preliminary Round and the two sides met at Lancing last Saturday and Russell’s men came away with a 3-0 win in the league.

“We played them Saturday and beat them 3-0,” said Russell.

“It was very similar to the Phoenix game, first half dominated, second half got a bit sloppy.

“More importantly we had six (players’) out on Wednesday and we had seven out against Horsham so the squad is coming back together now.

“Horrendous! I think I’ve won about four in four of five years,” Russell said of his own personal wins in the competition.

“When you’ve so many out you want to get through games and keep winning them, so we’ve done that now, so we’re getting stronger as a squad now.

“What could possibly go wrong? My jinx in The FA Trophy.  Do you know what, I said to the chairman, I really, really want to have a run in that, I’ve got to.

“My record is embarrassing so I want to have a good run in it and I’ll have a full-strength side and we’re going to have a real good go at it and hopefully we can win that.”
