I put pressure on myself, I don't want to be at the bottom of the table and I moan at my missus and question whether I'm the right person for it and whether we've got the right set of players, says Corinthian boss Michael Golding
CORINTHIAN manager Michael Golding says he is under no pressure from the club after his side’s poor start to the season.
Corinthian put in a resilient and full of desire performance to claim a 1-0 win at Sevenoaks Town last night to seal their first league win of the season.
Golding’s men remain at the foot of the Isthmian League South East Division table with four points on the board from nine games, while Harry Hudson’s side remain in the bottom three with four points from six games.
Brandon Davey’s half-volley settled an awful local derby at Greatness Park in the 57th minute to score Corinthian’s first league goal since Bank Holiday Monday, 29 August.
Attention now turns to a trip to league leaders Ramsgate on Saturday.
Steve Lovell’s men are three points clear of Chatham Town at the summit, having collected 20 points from nine games.
They lost 2-1 at home to Faversham Town last night in the Velocity Cup Second Round, in Simon Austin’s first game in charge of the struggling Lilywhites, who are second-from-bottom on four points from eight.
“A lovely one to follow this up. We’ll take it in our stride and Paul Sawyer and I will speak today, a couple of players will come in for their rehab tonight and do their bits and we’ll piece together a squad,” said Golding.
“It’s tough when you go from a Wednesday to a Saturday and you’ve had two Astros which is going to take it out of the players as well.
“We’ll set up, we’ll probably be similar to how we played last night.
“Ramsgate are an unbelievable side at this level. We went there last year and we won. We’re both two completely new teams but we know if we go there execute our game plan then we’ve got half a chance of causing an upset.”
When asked what he wants from his players on the Kent coast, Golding replied: “More of the same, same effort, same work-rate, same desire, a bit better quality on the ball, better finishing in terms of when we get those opportunities from set-pieces. Of we get those on Saturday it might be a completely different game.
“We’re a young team, we won’t go there and fear Ramsgate, similar to last night. No one expected us to win outside of our changing room and no one expects us to get a result on Saturday, which is perfect for Corinthian.”
Golding insists he is under no pressure from the club and that his job is not at risk despite their poor start to the campaign.
“On me? No! There’s pressure on myself, I put pressure on myself. I don’t want to be at the bottom of the table.
“When I spoke to every single player in pre-season, I said we want to get in the play-offs. Now that’s transpired that’s not going to be the case but there’s certainly no pressure from the club.
“There’s pressure from me because I want us to be better and I moan at the boys and I’m on this group because I know how much it means to be playing at Step Four and we absolutely don’t want to drop back into Step Five because it’s very, very hard to get out of a competitive Step Five division (the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division).
“There’s nothing worse than going to work on a Monday morning and everyone asking how have you get on and we can go to work now with a little spring in our step and a smile.
“I go home and I moan to my missus. I question whether I’m the right person for it and whether we’ve got the right set of players but as you’ve seen last night if the players are absolutely on it then we can be a match for the very, very good sides in this division.”
