Clapton Orient Ladies 1 Gravesend & Northfleet Ladies 2

Monday 20th March 2006
Fleet Ladies continued their winning league form, stretching recent games to a four match unbeaten run, with a narrow victory against bottom of the league side Clapton Orient ladies yesterday, writes Tina Martin.

However, it was Clapton Orient who started the brighter of the two teams, and unusually for Fleet ladies, who have been in good form of late, they were finding it difficult to get into the game and the scrappy start led to some early pressure on Fleet defence and keeper.

This led to a surprise early goal for Clapton, who capitalised on a long throw into the box which was defended poorly and after some frantic play forced Fleet into an own goal.

After this it was Fleet ladies who turned the game around with more determination and a better standard of football leaving them camped in the Clapton half for the rest of the first half.

Some very good team play and plenty of pressure finally paid off for Fleet as striker Mel Bishop scored a great goal across the keeper from the edge of the box, after receiving the pass from some good wing play by Bex Pattenden and Zoe Morrell.

With the score 1-1 at half time, Fleet still had a long way to go to win the game and still needed a much improved performance to break down the determined home side, who were fighting hard to stay in the match.

Fleet began the second half where they left off and immediately attacked the goal with Pattenden just missing the target. It might have been the story of the half with constant pressure by Fleet ladies being met by valient defending or the keeper to prevent the winning goal, until Jade McDermott sent across a ball into the box from left wing to right, superbly brought down by winger Zoe Morrell who finished passed the keeper into the corner of the net.

The game continued in this way, with Clapton mounting the odd break with the long ball out of defence, which was dealt with by Fleet but unfortunately they couldn’t extend the scoreline but took the valuable three league points to continue the pressure at the top end of the table.

Next week Fleet Ladies are in league home action, last home game of the season, against Hendon Ladies, 2.00pm kick off at AEI Sports and Social club, Gravesend.

Their Monday night coaching centre will move from Swan Valley community school astroturf pitches to the new venue as from tonight  and they will be introducing two new sessions for ages 7-16 years girls to attend.

These two sessions will run from 3.30 - 4.30 and 4.30 - 5.30 and are able to cater for all ages due to the fact that we have several qualified female coaches at the club, through their coaches development scheme and can divide girls into relevant age groups on the night.
