Charlton Legends come to Crayford to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital
Charlton’s Former Players’ Association will be hosting a charity match at VCD Athletic’s Oakwood ground in Crayford on Sunday (3:00pm) to raise money and awareness for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.
A host of Addicks legends will be turning back the clock to participate in the game, which will see them take on some of the greats from Italian club Frosinone.
The fixture has been organised by Luciano Masiello, who represented both clubs during his playing career. The former forward played eight games for Charlton between 1969 and 1970, with his only goal for the club coming against West Bromwich Albion in the Football League Cup.
He went on to play over 200 professional matches in Italy, which included spells at Almas Roma, Frosinone Calcio, S.S. Lazio and SS Francavilla and he will be bringing over a team to face a squad of star-studded Addicks.
The Charlton squad consists of: Bob Bolder, Lee Hayward, John Humphrey, Steve Gritt, Simon Webster, Anthony Barness, Richard Wilson, Dean Holness, Jason Brown, Leroy Ambrose, Peter Garland, Mark Kinsella, Mark Robson, Garry Nelson, Andy Jones, Paul Gorman, Jon Fortune, Paul Walsh, Tony Booth, Peter Shaw and guest player Gus Poyet.
The match is in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital, which was the first hospital dedicated to children in the English-speaking world. Established over 160 years ago, founder Dr Charles West recognised that children needed different care and treatments to adults.
The hospital have over 200,000 patient visits each year and are the largest paediatric centre in the UK for children’s heart problems, brain surgery, renal transplantation, intensive care, craniofacial reconstruction and gene therapy. In partnership with University College London’s hospitals they are also the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer.
