Charlie Sheringham pens two-year contract with Ebbsfleet United
EBBSFLEET UNITED have unveiled the arrival of striker Charlie Sheringham on a two-year contract as manager Steve Brown continues to fine-tune his squad.
Sheringham, 26, is no stranger to Kent football having previously starred for Welling United and Dartford before a reported five-figure fee took him into the Football League with AFC Bournemouth.
Sheringham, son of England and Manchester United star Teddy, began his career as a youth on the books of Millwall, Tottenham Hotspur, Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace before a spell at Cambridge City saw him register 6 goals in five games.
A move to Welling followed in 2008/09, where Sheringham was top scorer with 26 goals in all competitions. Moving to Bishop's Stortford a year later, and then Dartford the season after that, he was again top of both clubs' goalscoring charts.
Having found the net 30 times for Dartford in 2010/11, Bournemouth snapped Sheringham up in 2011 and he spent two seasons on the south coast, with another spell at Dartford on loan.
Last season he moved to AFC Wimbledon and also scored 5 goals in nine games for Salisbury City - the sort of form that had clubs in Conference Premier as well as South queuing up to sign him.
Fleet's vice-chairman Peter Varney told the club’s website: "We are continuing to improve our first-team squad for next season and Charlie is a player we have been pursuing for some time.
“He had a number of offers from clubs in higher leagues and we are delighted that he has shown such confidence in the future of our Football Club by signing a two-year agreement.”
The Fleet – who lost to Dover Athletic in the Conference South play-off final at the end of last season – begin their pre-season campaign with a trip to VCD Athletic on Saturday 12 July.
Tony Russell guided the Crayford-based side to the Ryman League Division One North title on the very last day of last season and will be playing Ryman Premier League football for the very first time this coming season.
