Canterbury City boss Ben Smith: It’s been pleasing to receive positive comments about the way we play the game

CANTERBURY CITY joint-manager Ben Smith has added five new players to his squad ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Beckenham Town.

The club are in tenth-place in the Southern Counties East Football League table, having won two, drawn two and lost two of their league games so far.

Beckenham Town lie in a disappointing thirteenth-place in the table and Smith said: “In terms of performances we have started the season well and probably surprised a few people with the quality that we have but unfortunately the points seem to have alluded us.

“I’ve said from day one that it will take time to get the squad where I want it to be and playing to my philosophy but I believe we are a lot further on in that process that I expected at this stage.

“It’s been pleasing to receive positive comments about the way we play the game but I’d swap that at the minute to win a game that maybe we don’t deserve to as we’ve certainly not had much luck in drawing our last two games where we’ve dropped four points.”

Smith has recently added Joe Kennett, Adam Woolcott (Whitstable Town), James Brown (Herne Bay), Dave Pilcher (Sittingbourne) and Chris Webber (Faversham Town) to their squad.

He said: “We are certainly being proactive in improving the squad and also showing our ambitions in this league and I’m confident our time will come.

“It’s just a case of keeping the group together now and gaining some experience over the course of the season.”

Looking ahead to playing Jason Huntley’s side tomorrow, Smith added: “I expect Beckenham to be strong opposition, their forward line is Ryman quality and we will have to defend well against them to stand any chance of a positive result.

“That said, we have shown that we can create chances against anyone so we won’t be going there and parking the bus as that’s really not what we are about.

“That could turn out to be very naïve but we are under no pressure at all and we have confidence in the way we play.”
