It’s now important that we start putting some more points on the board, says Canterbury City joint-boss Ben Smith

CANTERBURY CITY joint-manager Ben Smith says there’s a great atmosphere at the club.

City are sitting in tenth-place in the Southern Counties East Football League table on 20 points from 15 games and travel to play sixth-from-bottom side AFC Croydon Athletic tomorrow.

“Pleased to be back in league action after some good results in the FA Vase and Kent Senior Trophy,” said Smith, on the eve of their trip to Thornton Heath.

“I think it’s fair to say we hit a bit of a rough patch in the league, so hopefully we can take some of our cup momentum into the game at AFC Croydon Athletic.

“We felt a bit hard done by when we lost 1-0 to them at home earlier in the season after being comfortable throughout but as I said at the time full credit to them, they were very well organised and frustrated us on the day.

“It’s certainly a game that we haven’t forgotten and want to put right but the league is very competitive this season so we will have to go and work very hard for it.”

Canterbury City were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Cray Valley in the Kent Reliance Senior Trophy Second Round last weekend, going through to the next round by winning 3-1 on penalties.

Smith said: “I thought that we were excellent last week against Cray Valley, a side that I really rate to be honest, especially in the first half but the naivety of not taking some glorious chances nearly killed us.

“It was a great goal (from Brad Potter) for Cray to level it but where seven minutes of injury time came from I will never know!

“But we showed good character to pick ourselves up and show some composure form the spot.

“We now face Ashford in the next round, which is arguably the toughest draw but it is the one we wanted and we look forward to the challenge it represents.

“We’ve got a great atmosphere at the club at the moment and that’s been boosted with the addition of Darren Beale to the management team.

“It’s now important that we start putting some more points on the board.”
