Burman priced out of transfer market
DARTFORD boss Tony Burman says he’s finding it difficult to bring in a replacement for striker Cody McDonald, who signed for Norwich City a couple of weeks ago, writes Stephen McCartney.
McDonald was snapped up by Coca-Cola Championship club Norwich City on the last day of the transfer window for an undisclosed fee and Burman, speaking to www.dartfordfootballclub.co.uk this morning, says he’s been quoted ridiculous figures by players he wants to bring to Princes Park.
Burman, whose side welcome Billericay Town to Princes Park tomorrow, admitted he had his fingers burnt by fellow Championship club Crystal Palace, who snapped up winger Dave Martin for a £25,000 (plus other benefits) fee two years ago.
“For the second time in the last couple of seasons we have had a player who has played so well and attracted the attention of League clubs, with both players being transferred and becoming professionals,” said Burman.
“I have to tell you that as a manager, when you are in this position, it is without doubt a catch 22 situation.
“What I would say is that we have learnt a lot from the Dave Martin transfer, which we took into the negotiations for the Cody McDonald move.
“I did not want to let Dave or Cody go, but how do you stop a non-league player the opportunity to become a professional footballer and in Cody’s case we turned down two other offers from another League club for his services.
“Norwich made an offer on the Friday and improved it after the game against Maidstone, which is the one we accepted.
“We wish Cody the very best for the future and in my opinion, it’s going to be a very bright one.”
Burman has tried in vain to bring in a third striker, but has to rely on hard-working Rob Haworth and Brendon Cass, the club’s golden boot winner last term.
“So lets move on, we need another forward to compete with Cass and Rob,” said Burman. “The knock on affect of any transfer means when I go in for a player the price goes sky high, because of what people have read in the papers or on forums.
“I will not be rushed into any deal that is not right for the team or the club, but I will find someone that’s for sure.”
With his side just one point lower than Sutton United, a side that occupy that elusive final play-off berth, Burman has urged his players to continue their good run of form.
He said: “I think the players’ performances over the last few months has been excellent and they have deserved the credit that they have received.
“Having a fully fit squad makes a big difference, but having the belief is even more important.”
