You very rarely win something in football so you've got to cherish it, says Bromley striker Jamie Slabber
BROMLEY striker Jamie Slabber says he will cherish his first Vanarama Conference South winners’ medal.
The Ravens clinched their first league title since the Isthmian League title was won with a 4-2 home win over St Albans on the final day of the season back in 1961.
Bromley beat Weston-super-Mare 3-0 at Hayes Lane, thanks to goals from Reece Prestedge, Moses Ademola and Slabber scored the third in the 59th minute.
“I think we all just wanted to get the job done as soon as we could,” said the 30-year-old striker.
“We had a good start, 2-0 so brilliant, I added the third, which was nice and then job done.”
Slabber was full of praise for strike partner Bradley Goldberg, who set up Slabber to round off Bromley’s Greatest Ever Day.
“He done really good. He done brilliant to be fair. He drew players out and the keeper was committed and he just cut it back and I had an easy task sort of slotting it in so it was nice, it was good.”
“It’s been a funny season to be honest. I haven’t been involved much in the first half (of the season) but in the second half I’ve come on a lot.
“I’ve only started 15 games this season and scored 13 goals so it’s quite nice really. The change around or the fortune I’ve had, it’s good, it’s good for the club.”
Slabber made his one and only Premier League appearance (as a substitute) for Tottenham Hotspur against Liverpool when he was an eighteen-year-old.
He has also represented England at both under 18 and under 19 levels, as well as for the England National Game XI.
But Slabber revealed he has never won the Conference South with any of his previous clubs.
“My debut (at Tottenham Hotspur) was a long time ago. I’ve never won Conference South. I’ve always been in the play-offs, I’ve never won it,” revealed Slabber.
“It’s got to be up there making my debut (for Tottenham) and playing for England and this is all up there now.
“You very rarely win something in football so you’ve got to cherish it.”
Bromley complete their campaign with a trip to sixth-placed Gosport Borough next Saturday.
“No pressure! It’s going to be a nice little trip down Portsmouth way. I don’t know what (Mark Goldberg) is going to do because everyone will be smashed from this week,” said Slabber.
“We’ll go there and we’ll have a good time.”
Bromley face the possibility of facing Tranmere Rovers (who are bottom of League Two with two games to go) in the Vanarama National League next season.
They will return to Torquay United, where they lost 4-0 in The FA Trophy this season, and play clubs such Wrexham, Gateshead and Chester.
That seemed a lifetime away when the club were struggling in Ryman League Division One not so long ago.
When asked the players’ aspirations for next season, Slabber replied: “Massive clubs. Great stadiums to go to. We’ve got to try to compete the best you can. They’re seasoned pros in that sort of level and probably higher so we’ll go there and give it a go.
“Realistically it’s got to be stay in that league and finish as high as you can. I’m not saying we’re going to go on and win it, but realistically you’re looking to stay at that level and finish as high as we can.”
