Bromley's pride in becoming a Heart Town to mark charity's 50th anniversary
Monday 27th June 2011
BROMLEY had a stall at the Bromley Festival of Sport, which took place down the High Street yesterday.Along with prompting the Blue Square Bet South club’s Football in the Community work, the stall also sold advanced tickets for the club’s up and coming pre-season fixtures.
Visitors and residents were treated to a day of free sport and activity, organised in partnership by Bromley Council and Active Bromley.
One of the biggest sporting events in the town centre, the Bromley Festival of Sport showcased a variety of opportunities for people across the borough to get active to promote healthy living.
The day also saw the launch of Bromley as a British Heart Foundation Heart town to mark the charity’s 50th anniversary.
Local sports clubs and organisations took part on the day with market stalls in the High Street with information about their clubs and sports. There were demonstration areas for members of the public to see different sports and activities in action, with tennis, salsa, taekwondo, rugby, golf and many more.
Bromley is one of the first places in the UK to sign up as a British Heart Foundation (BHF) Heart Town. The Council has teamed up with the BHF to help put the heart into Bromley as part of the charity's Mending Broken Hearts Appeal which has been launched to mark its 50th anniversary, this year. Heart FM radio station and the "heart angels" will be there on the day.
Executive Councillor Graham Arthur said in a statement which was published on the club website: "I am delighted that we have been chosen as a 'Heart Town' to work with the British Heart Foundation to raise awareness in our borough about the fight against heart disease. We chose the Bromley Festival of Sport to launch this initiative because what better way to promote a healthy heart."
