Binks takes positives from spirited midweek display - EXCLUSIVE
CHATHAM TOWN boss Steve Binks has challenged his young guns to emulate the performance that they displayed at Tooting & Mitcham United in midweek, writes Stephen McCartney.
An outstanding display from goalkeeper Miroslav Oravec almost earned the Medway side a point against their third-placed hosts.
But Tooting & Mitcham United sealed the victory, one minute and 34 seconds into time added on at the end of the season half.
Binks, who was without the services of more experienced players, Darren Smith; Mark Brooks; Shane Suter and Richard Avery at Imperial Fields on Tuesday night, was a very proud man despite losing to Jon Henry-Haden’s 22nd goal of the season.
Chatham welcome Kingstonian to Maidstone Road on Saturday, before trips to Molesey (8th April) and Sittingbourne follow.
Relegation threatened Horsham YMCA are the visitors for the club’s last home game of the season on Saturday, 19th April, before Chats end their campaign with a trip to Burgess Hill Town.
But Chatham should maintain their Ryman League status this weekend if Horsham YMCA lose their basement battle with Molesey.
Binks says he wants to collect as many points from their last five games.
“I can’t praise the players highly enough, I’m going to really keep my chin up because I can see us winning our last five games now if we play like that,” Binks said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk after Tuesday night’s battling display.
“If we can match that performance there is no way we’re not going to pick up a lot more points in the remaining five games.”
Binks was pleased with Steve Hafner’s performance during the game.
Hafner, normally deployed as a winger by his previous clubs, partnered Rob Denness, although the latter was forced off the pitch late on with a knee injury.
“I think Rob Denness and Steve Hafner are proving a really good pairing up front,” said Binks. “We haven’t had a settled front two all season."
