I’ve never been involved with a group of lads who are so determined to win something, says Beckenham Town assistant Billy Walton
BECKENHAM TOWN assistant manager Billy Walton says he has a squad of players’ who are so determined to win the Sea Pioneer Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division title.
Jason Huntley’s men sit at the top of the table with 46 points from their 20 league games but they slipped up at home to fourth-placed Chatham Town last weekend, losing 2-1 at Eden Park Avenue.
Beckenham Town welcome Sheppey United on Saturday.
Ernie Batten’s side are in third-place in the table, four points behind Beckenham and Walton is keen to bounce back from their fourth league defeat of the season.
“I personally think we will go on and win the league because I know these lads and I know that changing room,” said Walton.
“I’ve never been involved with a group of lads who are so determined. They are really, really determined to win something and if we don’t finish top, whoever finishes above us will be a bloody good side because we’re a good side.”
Beckenham Town attracted their largest crowd of the season when 345 fans were treated to a game of high quality against Scott Lindsey’s side and another footballing masterclass is expected by both sides on Saturday.
“I love being involved in it. I want to play these games every week, that’s why we want to get promoted,” added Walton.
“I want to be playing sides with top managers coming down here and I want to pit our wits against them and we’re looking forward to the challenges.
“I think it (playing Sheppey) will be the same as (playing Chatham). I think it will be two good footballing sides. Sheppey won’t kick it long, they’ll want to play.
“I know seven or eight of their players, Ernie’s a good manager. They’ve got a good club there and they’ll come here and Chatham have beaten us both so we’ll want to win and they’ll want to win so bring it on.
“I can’t wait! I can’t wait for Saturday to come and then we’ve got two local derbies against Glebe, another professional manager in Gary Alexander.”
