Ashford Town unveil Gillman capture

Wednesday 11th July 2007

Ashford Town returned to pre-season training last night - and finally completed the signing of defender Rob Gillman from Blue Square Southern outfit Bishop’s Stortford, writes Stephen McCartney.

The 22-year-old “rock solid” defender originally left The Homelands in the summer of 2004 to sign for the Hertfordshire club, having clinched the players’ player-of-the-year and supporters’ player-of-the-year awards here in Kent.

The former Luton Town player was supposed to have returned to Ashford Town last week, but he finally put pen to paper on a contract with the ambitious Ryman League Division One South club last night.

New owner Mr Don Crosbie, however, apologised to expectant fans for keeping them waiting, but was delighted with Gillman’s return to the club.

Breaking the news on the fans’ forum on the official club website at www.ashfordtownfc.co.uk, he said: “Well, I am sorry to have kept you all in suspense, but I am over the moon to announce that Rob Gillman is now officially an Ashford Town contracted player, despite Wimbledon coming in for him today.

“Rob stuck to his word and is a truly great signing, dropping down two divisions because of his belief with Ashford.

“He was offered many things by Bishop’s Stortford, even the captain’s armband, but chose us.”
