Ashford Town 1-1 Waltham Forest (aet) - Ashford pay the penalty

Wednesday 11th October 2006

Ashford Town bowed out of the FA Trophy on penalties at the Homelands on Tuesday, when Joby Thorogood squandered the last Town kick to gift Waltham Forest the win, in front of their lowest crowd of the season.

Although Thorogood had rescued his side in the closing stages of normal time, as he tucked home an equaliser after Andy Thomas had put the Stags into an early lead.

But it just wasn't meant to be for Ashford Town, as they blew several chances to win the game in the final minutes.

George Fenwick found a place in the starting eleven, with Richard Sinden sacrificed to the bench in the sole change from the Saturday tie.

Although it was Waltham Forest who made much of the early running, taking the lead when Thomas finished off a superb flowing move on 17 minutes.

Ashford looked to fight back straight away through Joby Thorogood, but his rising strike flew wide of the mark.

But the turning point of the first half was referee Rob Whyte's decision not to point to the penalty spot when Afolabi Orilonishe was too honest and stayed on his feet after Simon Overland had clipped his ankles.

However this wasn't the only chance that the Stags had to wrap up the game. Goalscorer Thomas, Victor Renner and Danny Gabriel all should have done better with second half efforts, and the Nuts and Bolts made them pay.

Substitute Sinden found space moments after coming on, and delivered a perfect ball for Joby Thorogood to level proceedings.

Sinden himself could have completed a great Ashford comeback, but his header was wonderfully saved by Jason Willis, who had struggled for much of the game with his inability to catch the ball.

Ashford were hit with the sending off of Tom Adlington for a second bookable offence in the 113th minute, but the scores remained level as the game moved into penalties.

Anthony Allman slotted home the first, followed by successful kicks from Marc Cumberbatch, Sinden and Simon Glover. Nevertheless Thorogood's kick could only strike the foot of post, leaving Danny Kenny to hit his down the middle and set the Stags up to with a first round tie at Hastings.
