Angels release Watts to cut their cloth

Monday 10th November 2008

TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow has criticised referee Carl Brook after he postponed Saturday’s home showdown against fellow high-flyers Carshalton Athletic, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Angels supremo was “annoyed and frustrated” that the game was postponed just an hour before kick-off, due to four or five small areas of standing water in the main outfield that the forking had failed to cure and the goalmouth in front of the north stand was very spongy.

“I thought his decision was premature and the referee didn’t talk or explain,” fumed Warrilow, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk tonight.

“He (the referee) said he made his decision and that was it. Baring in mind I’ve been there since eleven o’clock and everyone had worked on it, we had the worst of the weather. Looking back on it I think it would have finished.”

Warrilow revealed tonight that his star-striker, Carl Rook was to miss out against the Robbins at the weekend, because his side thrashed Ashford Town (Middlesex) 7-1 away from home seven days earlier.

But the former Horsham striker may be recalled for tomorrow night’s trip to sixth-from-bottom side Sutton United.

“Rookie trained well in the week,” said Warrilow. “It’s difficult. Obviously I was going to keep it as it was (against Carshalton). If I changed it and came unstuck I’m asking for trouble.

“Sutton are a big, physical side. It’s one of them. I’ll sleep on it tonight before I make the decision.

“We’ve got a big November. It would be nice to keep the momentum going Saturday against Carshalton. We definitely wanted the game on, they weren’t that bothered the game was called off.

“It would be nice to have played Saturday and hopefully get a win under our belts. If we win tomorrow night I believe we go second - that would be nice.”

Sutton United were knocked out of the FA Cup in the first round at the weekend, as Notts County scored the only goal of the game.

“I don’t think they’re struggling with their position, they’re not a million miles away from the top,” warned Warrilow.

“They’ve got high expectations and they’re a very good side who will be there or there abouts at the end of it.

With big central defender, James Donovan still on loan at Ryman League Division One North outfit East Thurrock United, one other player has been released from his contract.

“Kirk Watts has left the club,” revealed Warrilow tonight. “I spoke to Kirk the other week, he’s at the stage of his career that he wants to play every week. He’s coming up to 30 and he wants to play. I couldn’t guarantee him (a start). We sat down and had a chat and drew a line under it.”

Current players, John Westcott, Fraser Logan, Simon Glover and Jamie Cade can all play in Watts’ left-wing position.

“We’re not immune to the current climate so we’re cutting our cloth accordingly and that wasn’t the reason for him going,” explained Warrilow.

“It’s an area we’ve got covered so there’s no rush to bring in a wide left player in.”
