AFC GREENWICH BOROUGH have appointed Tony Russell as Director of Football.

The former manager of Erith Town, VCD Athletic, Cray Wanderers, Lewes and Ramsgate, has joined the tenth-tier Southern Counties East Football League First Division club.

A club statement said: “The club has appointed Tony Russell as Director of Football, tasking him with embedding a single club philosophy and ensuring a clear pathway from youth to first-team and into the professional game.

“Tony is a hugely respected figure within the game, admired by both players and coaches alike.

“His experience, leadership and proven track record make him the ideal figure to shape and grow the football club’s long-term future; ensuring our football philosophy runs throughout every level of the club.

“In this pivotal role, Tony will embed our club philosophy, laying the foundations for long-term success. He will ensure we provide a genuine pathway for our talented youngsters who aspire not only to play for our first-team but to progress into the National League, EFL and Premier League.”

Sporting Director, Gary Fiore, formerly of Welling United, added: “On a personal level, we are delighted to have secured Tony Russell into such an influential position within the club.

“Having worked closely with Tony previously, as well as in these early days at Greenwich Borough, it is clear just how impactful he will be, both on and off the pitch.”

Reece Parara’s side sit at the summit of the First Division table, having picked up seven wins and a draw from their opening eight games and are three points clear of Chatham-based outfit SE Dons.

AFC Greenwich Borough travel to Russell’s old stomping ground, the Erith Sports Stadium on Wednesday night to play Welling Town.

Russell won League titles at VCD Athletic and Cray Wanderers but lasted only 26 days as the manager of Ramsgate last summer. and was one of the very few first managers in our neck of the woods that started to play-out-from-the-back, which is now copied my most non-league sides.

The original Greenwich Borough resigned from the Southern Counties East Football League on 21 January 2020 due to 'severe business interruption.'
