We have a strong squad assembled and hope to be competing as best we can, says AFC Croydon Athletic boss Kevin Rayner

AFC CROYDON ATHLETIC manager Kevin Rayner says he wants to get their campaign off to an unbeaten start.

The Rams completed their Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division campaign in thirteenth-place last season and host top-seven finishers Deal Town on Saturday’s opening day.

“We have a strong squad assembled and hope to be competing as best we can,” said Rayner.

“The first target is to try and stay in The FA Cup until September, then just to keep as high up the table as possible and see from there.

“We didn’t lose a game in pre-season and had varied sides ranging in strength.  Our last and most competitive pre-season game showed that we look ok.

“Our squad is pretty much as per the start of last season with most retained. We have lost two players to a higher level but have welcomed a couple back and picked up some very good additions this year.”

Looking ahead to the visit of Derek Hare’s side, Rayner said: “We start with Deal Town who are a good side and by all accounts are expecting to do well.  We will have to be at it to get a good result and I’m sure it will be a good competitive game.

“We get off with three home games this season so we have a chance to set a good mood but all three games will be very tough and we will have to work really hard to get through the week with the aim of achieving a batch of good results.

“Our squad is ready and we have a good group who know what this league is about so we are hopeful.”
