I had said that our team will improve through September and to get the points on the board, says AFC Croydon Athletic boss Kevin Rayner

AFC CROYDON ATHLETIC boss Kevin Rayner says he always knew his side would come good in September.

The Rams are now in the top seven in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division table with 10 points from six games after back-to-back wins over Beckenham Town (2-1) and Erith Town (1-0).

“Our last two games have seen us battle to pick up six points in two contrasting away wins,” said Rayner.

“A pretty much full squad was too strong for an improved Beckenham side but we travelled to Erith Town with seven players missing through various reasons and a back four that had not trained together, let alone play together.

“So to come away with a clean sheet and putting in a real dogged display shows the tremendous team spirit building up in the group.

“I had said that our team will improve through September and to get the points on the board we have so far has been a tremendous effort.”

AFC Croydon Athletic lock horns with their league rivals Bearsted in The Buildbase FA Vase First Qualifying Round on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears arrive in fourteenth-place in the table with four points in the bag from six league games.

“We can now look forward to our FA Vase game with Bearsted and it’s a good chance for club’s at our level to progress through a few rounds to earn a bit of valuable income and then start to dream of greater things,” said Rayner.

“We know that Sunday’s game will be a close encounter.  Bearsted are a good, strong side and we will need to be at our best and play well to get through.

“We should have a pretty much full squad now available moving forward and if we can get through on Sunday we may well be able to progress a long way this season.”
