Former Angels delight Bromley

Molesey 1-2 Bromley
Ryman League Division One South
Thursday 1 January 2004
Stephen McCartney reports from Walton Road

Bromley manager Alan Walker admitted he wasn't happy with his side's performance even though the Ravens chalked up their second double of the season with a hard fought victory at Walton Road today.

The former Tonbridge Angels manager said: "I was very disappointed with the way we played today.  In the first half we tried a new system where we played five in midfield and it didn't work.  People didn't know the roles that we required of them out there but once we changed it to a four in the second half I thought we dominated them and it was just a matter of time when we got back into the game.

"In the second half we probably did ok, but still only ok, I am not happy with the way we played at all."

Walker has acted quickly to change the personnel at Hayes Lane.  Four Tonbridge Angels players have made the switch with Andy Larkin and Sam Tydeman making their debuts today to join Peter Overton and Lloyd Hume who joined last week.

However, Walker revealed two players have left Hayes Lane with Joe Vines ready to make the switch to Dr Martens Premier Division side Crawley Town.

Walker revealed: "The reasons why I brought in Andy Larkin and Sam Tydeman is Joe Vines is going to Crawley Town and we have lost Dean Forbes and Tony Reid.

"We have torn up Dean Forbes'  contract by mutual consent.  He has new work commitments and he can't come training so that's no good for us.

"Reid was simply released because he is on a fortune and I have got Wade Falana here whose playing for nothing.  He is a similar type of player to Reid and I needed Tony's money to be fair.  I am not saying Tony has been a bad player for the club but I needed his money to strengthen the team in other areas."

Missing today's game at Molesey, Mark Willy should be available for selection for Tuesday's trip to Whyteleafe.  He is set to have the stitches removed from a head injury sustained on Boxing Day later today.

Bromley's hot shot, Adolph Amoako beat his marker before unleashing a low right footed shot on goal which goalkeeper Erkhan Ibrahim pushed wide of the near post after only 80 seconds before Amoako headed the resulting corner over the bar.

Bromley goalkeeper Danny Harwood comfortably saved Wayne Noad's header following an eleventh minute corner kick.

Steve Baker's fiercely driven free kick struck the first man in a four man Bromley wall before Billy Mead, who had a spell at Hayes Lane under former boss Stuart McIntyre last season, lashed a shot wide of the left upright.

A blunder by Harwood gifted the hosts the opening goal after 25 minutes.  Harwood dropped a cross from the right and James Rose reacted to fire the ball inside the right post from close range.

Eight minutes later, Bobby George weaved his way past Lee Richardson but the shot lacked conviction inside the Molesey penalty area and the ball rolled to the poised goalkeeper.

Harwood, however, watched the ball take an awkward bounce in front of him from Baker's 25 yard effort before another shot from Mead screamed wide of the left post from a 25 yard left footed strike.

Walker said:  "The players got a bit of a telling off in the dressing room at half time, but to be fair to them they responded in a way I wanted them to respond and they turned the game around and came away with a great three points."

With Walker's words still fresh in their minds, Bromley increased the tempo and urgency in their play with a couple of good openings within the first three minutes of the second half.

Michael Harney slipped the ball into Tydeman's path but the debutant dwelled too much on the ball inside the penalty area with the ball stuck beneath his feet on a muddy pitch allowing the home defence to clear.  The ball fell to Wilfort but the former Molesey player lashed his shot wide.

Wilfort however, ran at the home defence before setting up Harney whose left footed shot from 20 yards sailed over the crossbar.

Just after the hour mark George's run down the left channel was ended by a foul by Stuart Booth.  From John Wilfort's right footed free kick, Amoako's powerful header from 12 yards flew wide.

The introduction of fans favourite, Wade Falana soon followed and after Wilfort volleyed wide from the right hand side outside the penalty area, two goals in the space of two minutes gave Bromley those crucial three points.

With fifteen minutes remaining, Ibrahim looked to have been ready to pluck the ball out of the air following Wilfort's cross from the right, but predator Amoako got there first to powerfully head home inside the right corner of the net.

Bromley turned the game upside down two minutes later with Overton scoring his first goal for Bromley in only his second outing for the club.

He shot from the left hand side just outside the penalty area curling the ball past the diving goalkeeper finding the top far corner of Molesey net.

Bromley finished the game strongly and had a third goal ruled out in the last five minutes.  Larkin met Colin Luckett's high near post corner with a powerful header that crashed into the net but the goal was ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper.

Bromley are without a game on Saturday but travel to Whyteleafe next Tuesday before Horsham are the visitors to The Clive Christian Stadium in Hayes Lane on Saturday 10 January (3pm).
