Slade Green aiming for top eight finish

Phil Miles, manager of Go Travel Kent League side Slade Green, believes his side can finish the season in the top eight, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Small Glen outfit, on a very limited budget, if any, have added Tom Olson to the squad, having joined from Gravesend & Northfleet's youth team.

Miles, speaking on the club's website, said: "Some of the existing squad might find it hard to accept that we have thrown most of the new players in straight away, but in fairness it is the only way we will find out if the new lads are good enough for Slade Green."

Twelve placed Slade Green are without a game this weekend but will be looking for a good return from the visit of new-boys Sevenoaks Town, on Tuesday 9th March.

Miles added: "Although we have performed well over the last couple of months against the top sides, these are the games that hold the biggest fear for me.  If I'm honest, then the players have let themselves down against the sides around us in the league.  We need to get focused and start picking up points.  We have a good run of games coming up and if we can start winning them I firmly believe we can finish in the top eight.  That may sound a long shot but you have to set targets, that is ours, I certainly don't believe it's beyond us."

Miles heaped praise on several players that have stayed loyal to the club.

He added: "The players that have been with me for a while, like Scott Lewis, Shaun Malyon, Lee Barber, Paul Vines and Darren Upson have been fantastic this season.  They could have all left and moved on when things went wrong earlier in the season, but they have stuck with it and have come through the other side.  I believe all are now much better players and would hold down a regular place within most Kent League sides."
