Beckenham suffer from travel sickness
BECKENHAM Town’s
away-day trips to the Kent Coast have not provided a win all season. This
Saturday’s visit to Hythe Town ended in a 3-1 defeat for Beckenham. It came in
the same week that star striker Danny Beszant broke his leg.
Beckenham Town got off to the worst possible start when they went behind to a
soft goal after 6 minutes but managed to pull level through Lewis Wood after
some good work by Darren Hall.
The game never really got going with both sides never reaching their true
potential. Beckenham’s trade-mark one-touch football was lost on the motorway
traveling to the game.
After the break the home side gradually grew stronger and went close from a
free-kick after a header was blocked. Beckenham continued to threaten and the
game ebbed and flowed from end to end.
Going into the last quarter of an hour it looked as if the visitors had taken
the initiative and were at looking as if they were going to win the game when in
the 80th minute Hythe took the lead when a probing cross was blocked by keeper
Gary Hopper only for it to fall at the feet of an advancing forward who poked
the ball into the net.
With the clock ticking Beckenham Town threw everyone forward in search of a
point but matters turned worse with two minutes to go when Hopper- trying to
gain some advantage took a throw in to Matthew Belton who attempted to launch
the ball into the opponents penalty area only for his kick to be charged down by
an alert Hythe player who kicked the ball some 30 yards into an empty net.
Beckenham's assistant manager Jason Taylor added ”We play well as a unit which
unfortunately means we play bad as a unit. We have only one more League game
left before our Kent Senior Trophy final so it could be that some players have
their mind set on that, all I know is we did not perform today.
"The lads will bounce back I know that for sure. The club is still reeling
with the news that Danny Beszant broke his leg and we all wish him a speedy
recovery he is such an asset to the side.”
Beckenham Town are away to table toppers Ramsgate - six points clear at the top
- next Saturday.
